This time of year, we watch, read, tell, and listen to scary stories to give ourselves a fright, but horror stories in mythology, history, and scripture exist for reasons beyond our amusement. Horror stories also remind us of how hard life can be in the worst of times. They warn us of consequences and pain and torment, perhaps so that we can avoid them, perhaps to prepare us for when they cannot be avoided, or perhaps to make us ask who we want ourselves to be when faced with true horror. An important TRIGGER WARNING: this sermon will contain a conversation about violence.
